California State University, Long Beach, sits atop a 322-acre campus overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The Student Recreation and Wellness Center (SRWC) is a hub for on-campus recreational activities, intramural sports, exercise and wellness services. SRWC became the first building on the CSULB campus to be certified a “Gold” Center by the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) green building certification system. The eco-friendly, state-of-the-art building features many technological advances, including biometric hand scanners for entry, filter water fountains, digital bulletin boards, LCD touch screens, adjustable lighting and hydration stations.
In 2007, AFP provided the vast majority of initial floor planning and equipment supply for the Center. It houses a three court gym, indoor jogging track, 20,000 square feet of weight and cardio equipment, racquetball courts, a custom-made rock climbing wall, and a wellness center swimming pool and spa, as well as many other amenities. Over the years, CSULB has continued to refine its programming and continues to seek enhancements in equipment and performance technology.
Renovate the existing multipurpose martial arts, boxing, and Pilates focused studio and create a Functional Zone studio.
The goal was not simply to replace, but to enhance SRWC’s offering. Today’s explosion in functional and movement based training programs could best be accommodated with the introduction of a guided flooring system. These performance-structured floors provide a multitude of programming especially suited for small group exercise instruction. Pavigym’s Group X air cushioned flooring system was selected as the foundation for the custom-tailored Functional Zone training system and was manufactured to CSULB’s specifications.
The new Functional Zone studio at CSULB accommodates popular on-campus activities including martial arts, boxing and Pilates, but now incorporates several new training and program methodologies designed specifically by the Rec Team instructors. All onsite trainers are now certified in the Functional Zone floor to enhance the student workout experience and add an entirely new dimension to the space.
